The Group TYPO

The Group Typo was originally founded by four young graduates of a famous art college, Yasaburou KUWAYAMA, Katsuichi ITOH, Takao HAYASHI and Katsumi NAGATA in 1959. Those days Japanese typefaces were usually created by craftsmen at type foundry, so they were first Japanese designers dedicated in designing of typefaces. In 1969, their most-known typeface “Typos” was released as cold type. Typos was so epoch-making that lot of their successors, the graduates from art schools, started typeface designing.

Kumiko HAYASHI, the president of TypeBank joined the group after Takao passed away. In 2007, KUWAYAMA and ITOH directed TypeBank design team to complete the design of Kanji scripts, which was stored in the archive from the time the two first desgined 40 years ago. The typeface is now known as “Kanji Typos” family.
