UDTypos

TypeBank Universal Design (TBUD) fonts are not only made by type-designer. These fonts are characteristic of the final decision of design that was reflected in the spiral-up from the objective result of the research by Prof. Yasushi Nakano at the Keio University who is a specialist of special needs education for the low vision in the academic organization.

We analyze the situation which is easily mistaken when seeing the characters, and we evaluate the typeface based on the result through the experiment on the points of readability and legibility. Then we decide on the final design of these fonts. After such verification process, we developed TBUD font family which has high quality of readability and legibility.

This font Family has 4 kinds of element types; TBUD Gothic, TBUD Round Gothic, TBUD Mincho, and UD Typos, and include 15 typefaces. These typefaces are made for the purpose of “accessible for everyone, regardless of their acuity or age” which gives us a great result on the scene based on the importance of readability.

And in TBUD font family, 3 weights fonts of Round Gothic type, which is proper of the textbook typesetting for children with low vision, are selected as Gakusan-font, which correspond to character shapes for compulsory education. 1,945 characters derived from Jyoyo-Kanji and Kana shapes are based on the guidance record by Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, then these Gakusan-fonts are easy to read for children with low vision, and they can learn proper shapes of writing.
